The acclaimed filmmaker's mythic action epic, The Odyssey, stands as a movie audiences have been anticipating since its announcement. It easily ranks among the most hotly anticipated films of 2026. The Initial Look at the Legendary Cast
The debut footage reveals Matt Damon in the role of the king of Ithaca. Audiences are introduced to Tom Holland as Telemachus alongside Anne Hathaway as Penelope. During an emotional scene, the character pleads with Odysseus to promise his safe homecoming, only for him to look up and question what happens if he cannot. The trailer also offers a brief, shadowy glimpse at Polyphemus the Cyclops, whose flock are taken by the hero and his men on their treacherous voyage.
Adapted from a cornerstone of Western literature, The Odyssey follows the epic journey of the legendary King of Ithaca. Following his victory at Troy, as told in Homer's Iliad, the king faces a long and perilous return to his homeland.
Mythical Encounters with an All-Star Cast
On his travels, Odysseus confronts countless challenges and mythical beings. These include the enchantress Circe, known for turning humans into pigs, as well as the treacherous Sirens. Despite these trials, Odysseus vows to overcome anything to get back to Penelope and Telemachus in Ithaca.
This film's ensemble is remarkably star-studded. Joining Damon, Holland, and Hathaway are Charlize Theron as the cunning Circe, together with Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Tale of Many Adaptations
The classic poem has inspired numerous adaptations over the years. Examples include contemporary versions and a late-90s dance production. There has even been a stage musical adaptation titled Epic: The Musical, released in the form of a nine-album collection.
