The Princess of Wales's Yearly Festive Carol Concert Honours Charity Helpers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with guests including dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will listen to a mix of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Focusing on Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who established a foundation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any expectation or recognition, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others," the Princess expressed in a note prior to the concert.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists supported by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of instrumental training.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been assisted by the organisation, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in the concert.

"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

Generations Gathering

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.

That will include nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

The musical lineup includes recording artist Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
