According to data provided by Israel, at least 98 detainees from Palestine have lost their lives during detention starting from October 2023. A human rights group operating from Israel has stated that the true toll is probably substantially higher, because of numerous of missing individuals originating in Gaza.

Civilian Deaths

Restricted official information shows that the vast majority of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who perished in prison were ordinary citizens, based on a simultaneous inquiry.

By May of 2024, a armed services record tracking all militants in Gaza, a registry of more than 47,000 listed people, documented just 21 casualties in confinement. By that point, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had perished in jail.

Detention Conditions

Brutality, mistreatment, and additional maltreatment of Palestinians has been normalised across Israel’s detention facilities throughout 24 months of war. “As long as these measures remain in effect, each Palestinian individual in confinement faces risk, even the healthy ones, including the youth who have no underlying conditions.”

Notable Incidents

Certain fatalities in custody have been publicly known, such as a senior medical chief who perished in detention after a third of a year in custody.

An inmate detained alongside the deceased stated that he was taken to the yard by prison staff shortly before his death, clearly wounded and unclothed from the lower body. His body has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Other prisoners who perished in confinement by Israeli authorities remain anonymous. Correctional authorities and military supplied analysts with the number of casualties in detention, and minimal additional information for example the site where they lost their lives, but excluding the inmates’ personal details.

Documentation Problems
