A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, pointing to a sudden change in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Emerges

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with participants able to wager on everything from elections to current affairs.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
